Greatness Circle - what, who and how

Updated: Jul 20, 2024

Attending weekly Greatness Circle (in depth explanation follows a few paragraphs down) for a few years now, means it’s not too difficult to identify something good about myself. Usually, I share my greatness as a trait that I have seen during the week. For a while, I used a list of traits from the internet to decide what the trait was that I was seeing in myself and wanted to talk about. It helped to hone my understanding and have a specific word or two for it to make it easier to communicate to the group.

Today nine people attended our zoom meeting. We stopped meeting in person in 2020 because of the Covid crisis. Thank goodness zoom gave us an alternative.

My share this week explained my willingness to shift direction. I was applying for a position in a drug treatment center to facilitate group counseling in particular.  Dropping the idea of going to work in a treatment center, as a wise friend suggested, and following the idea of just because I can do the work doesn’t mean I should.

Then in addition, switching to the new commitment of writing every day, by accepting a 30 day writing challenge. I am now on day 3 of that challenge.

Several months ago, I had a dream that supports the writing emphasis. In it was the simple yet distinct pronouncement, “I am a writer”. I made that one statement; nothing else was said in the dream. The point was clear.

The process we follow in Greatness Circle is to state your greatness and give an example or two of it. Then the other attendees give positive feedback, always following the Greatness Circle guidelines, such as no minimizing and resetting the person if that happens. Credit for this group goes to Kathy Kelling, who started the group, provided the guidelines and has kept it going for years.

The feedback I got from others in the circle today included:

·         I listen to myself

·         I follow my intuition

·         The willingness to chase my dream

·         I’m not stuck

·         I believe in myself

·         I choose for me

·         Honesty

·         I live aware of the journey not focused on a destination

Receiving feedback from the group reinforces, strengthens, and expands one’s comprehension and appreciation of the greatness they have shared. All this makes one grow in the ability to humbly accept one’s own greatness. We all have greatness, yet we live in a culture that encourages minimizing and calls owning your strengths bragging. Greatness Circle challenges that pattern. We are meant to own who we are and the attributes we bring to this life. As you can imagine, I enjoyed and appreciated the reinforcement and support in my journey from the group today as always.

You are always welcome to join us and see if attending greatness is for you. Contact me lcockrum@cox.net and I will get you the information so you can visit group and recognize your own greatness.
